Agriculture and livelihood activities.
Agriculture is an important livelihood activity in Somalia not only in terms of meeting the food needs of the population (nearly 50% of population's cereal requirements are met through domestic production) but also in terms of generating income through crop sales and agricultural labor opportunities. Agriculture is a major component particularly for two of the main rural livelihood systems in Somalia.
Agriculture is an important economic activity in Somalia.
Somalia's people live in extremely poor and underdeveloped conditions. Livelihoods are broadly based on subsistence farming and pastoralism with limited opportunity to earn wages. Project activities include a cash grant for household businesses; provision of donkey carts for transport services; restocking of livestock herds; donation of agricultural equipment; donation of other agricultural inputs such as seeds; support in rehabilitation of irrigation systems including the donation of water pumps; and provision of cash for work.
Our agriculture and livelihood programmes focus on the following key areas:
- Using the available natural resources as assets that people draw upon to make a living.
- Utilizing agriculture to produce sufficient food at both regional and national level and to guarantee household access to sufficient food. ;
- highlighting the importance of institutions and policies in shaping the opportunities and constraints that people face.
- Encouraging Community driven livelihood and food security initiatives.
